La Digue Seychelles is the fourth largest Seychelles Island, with a population of around 2000. La Digue lies 40 kilometres from Mahé Island and seven kilometres from Praslin Island.
This granite Island receives its visitors mainly by boat at the quaint jetty at La Passe, and La Digue holidays are a popular destination for holidaymakers wishing to sample a taste of the traditional Seychelles.
This is a place where ox cart and bicycle are the main modes of transport and where effort is being made to preserve the traditional customs, architecture and leisurely way of life of the Seychelles.
Hotels on La Digue Island are for the most part situated along the west coast, while the east coast tends to have a wilder aspect.
Anse Source d’Argent is probably the most photographed beach in the Seychelles and is famous for its sculpted granite rocks and stunning white sandy beaches.
At L’Union estate you can view the traditional coconut oil mill and coconut oven (calorifer). Also to be seen is the spectacular plantation house and adjoining boat yard. There is also an ancient cemetery containing the remains of the first settlers on the Seychelles Islands.
La Digue Vev Special Reserve is home to two rare species of terrapin and the rare paradise flycatcher. La Digue is also an ideal stepping stone for the nearby Island attractions of Grande and Petite Soeur, Coco and Marianne Islands.
North La Digue
La Passe jetty is the Island’s main centre and base for boat and helicopter transfers. North La Digue offers the majority of accommodation facilities from medium hotels like Le Domaine de l'Orangeraie and La Digue Island Lodge to small guesthouses and hotels like Patatran Village. North La Digue is also excellent for snorkeling. Spectacular views can be enjoyed from Anse Patates. The area also has some well-preserved colonial houses and it well worth a look!
South La Digue
South La Digue has two of the islands most splendid beaches which are situated on the South East coast - Grand Anse and Anse Coco.
The area is home to La Digue Vev Special Reserve and the rare paradise flycatcher (one of the rarest and most unique birds in the world), it is also home to the Seychelles bulbul, Seychelles sunbird, and the extremely rare yellowfin and star bellied terrapins.
L’Union Estate
You will enjoy walking a beautiful trail, which leads you past the coconut plantation and the charming colonial house to the idyllic cove of Anse Source d‘Argent, from where it continues to Anse Pierrot, Anse aux Cedres and Anse Bonnet Carre. When the tide is low, it is possible to walk round the rock formations on foot and even round the southern tip to Anse Maron, where you will discover a stream flowing from the southwest forest.
Favourite picnic spots for holidaymakers are Anse Fourmis, Anse Banane and Anse Gaulettes on the east coast.
